Royal and Sun Alliance Insurance
The history of Royal and Sun Alliance dates back nearly 300 years. The Sun, which was established in 1710, is the oldest part of the company and over the years there have been a series of mergers and acquisitions which has resulted in the current company name and structure. This last change to the company’s major structure took place in 1996 when the two largest insurance companies in the UK , Royal Insurance and Sun Alliance, merged together to create Royal and Sun Alliance. Today they operate in over 130 countries around the world and have over 20 million customers. In 2002 Royal and Sun Alliance evaluated their operations following the success of MORE TH>N which they had set up as their direct arm in the previous year. This has resulted in them exiting several countries in which they formally traded and focussing more on general insurance policies. This has led to a set-up of three core markets – the UK , Scandanavia and the International market. They are now the second largest commercial insurer in the UK , in fact this makes up for over a third of all Royal and Sun Alliance operations worldwide.
Although Royal and Sun Alliance now conduct much of their UK business through their direct arm, MORE TH>N, the company and several of its related companies continue to offer competitive insurance through brokers and other intermediaries. Indeed the company has recently established a connection with Westinsure, an alliance of independent community based insurance brokers, who will offer Royal and Sun Alliance home and motor insurance products,
