Female Car Insurance

"What do I need to know about Female Car Insurance?"

You may not have heard of the EU Gender Directive but you’ll certainly be
familiar with its outcome. At least you will be if you drive a car and you’re
female.

In the past insurers used to be able to use gender as a factor when determining
how much to charge someone for their car insurance. Since men were typically
more commonly involved in high speed crashes and women were more likely to be
involved in low speed collisions, these factors made a difference. However
insurers now have to abide by the directive, which has been in place since
December 2012.

What does this mean for you if you are a woman looking for good value car
insurance? Well, you may find your insurance premiums are not as cheap as they
were in the past. However it does depend on your age. Older drivers who have
more experience on the roads are not likely to notice as big a difference as
younger ones. Just prior to the new ruling coming into force, the government
determined that prices for young women aged between 17 and 25 could rise by as
much as a quarter.

There is nothing you can do to withstand this ruling since it applies across the
whole of the car insurance industry. However you can do a number of other things
that will enable you to keep premiums down by as much as possible. For example
if you are young you may consider telematics car insurance. This means your car
will be fitted with a black box and good driving habits mean you’ll pay less
as you present less of a risk. In every case you should shop around for the best
price you can get, and never renew with the same insurer before looking
elsewhere. You never know if you could get cheaper if you don’t.
